I like fiction for the stories, not for the symbolism and representations of the author's views on society.
Someone tell me that Hemingway has written better books than The Old Man and the Sea and The Sun Also Rises. They are dull and the characters annoy me. And in The Sun Also Rises they constantly drink but no one seems to get sick or even ever have to go to the bathroom. Why does great literature never mention basic bodily functions? I can't relate to characters who are SPONGES.
